its a food/cooking analogy

when someone is cooking a meal, the front burner is where all the action is, its where the main dish is prepared and where all the attention needs to be focused, the back burner is usually for side dishes that require very little attention and/or care

your not as important or intreaging as someone else but you still are some what so you get put behind that person basically a back up if someone else doesn't work out

basicly what a lot of people here have answered. to be put last in the relationship, usually other things are more important to that person, and your left to feel last.
