I've never purchased a yolkless egg in the supermarket.
The reason that hens lay unfertilized eggs is because in large hen houses where they produce the eggs the hens live their lives in tiny cages placed in rows upon rows of other hens and just sit there for their entire lives laying eggs. They never meet up with a rooster so the egg never gets fertilized.
In organic farms where the hens are allowed to roam free they make a lot less eggs for one thing so the farmer or a group of people can do what is known as "candling" which is where they hold a light behind the egg in a dark room and they can see into the egg to make sure it is unfertilized. Or the farmer might just not have a rooster on his farm at all to ensure none of the eggs get fertilized.

RE:
Are chicken eggs we buy in stores fertilized? And if not why do hens lay them -- unfertilized?
There're yolkless eggs -- they are obviously unfertilized and are anomalies.
But what about normal commercially produced eggs?

The ones you buy in the store are unfertilized.
Hens lay eggs unfertilized just like woman has her period every month. It's pretty much the same concept, just hens produce more eggs and much more frequently than women do. (yeah, kinda gross to think about)

No they are not fertilized. There is a person who has the job of making sure called a Candler. They shine a light through the egg to see if there is a chick inside. Most birds lay eggs at a regular interval every month (Like a woman with a period) Doves lay eggs every 2 weeks. the yoke is just a natural part of the egg given by the mother and not the father. Hope I helped!

Nope, they lay eggs based on daytime hours, not the presence of a male. In fact, most, if not all, of the eggs you buy at any grocery store are unfertilized from hens that never been w a roo.

Generally, the chicken (and, any other poultry) eggs you buy in the store are unfertilized. There do not seem to be any exact references out there, but unfertilized egg laying would seem to be a mutation of some sort. Mutation or not, selective breeding is the reason modern, commercial egg-production chickens lay massive amounts of eggs in their lifetime.

the eggs you buy in the stores are not fertilized.the hen does not ever need to be around a rooster to lay them. chickens don`t have a choice in whether or not to lay eggs, they have to. also, a chick will not start to develop in the egg until it has started being incubated. that is why a hen will lay an egg a day in her nest, then if she`s feeling 'broody' after a week or so, she will start to sit on them.. they won`t start developing until she does start sitting, which is natures way of making sure they all hatch around the same time. sorry I`m rambling.... I know a lot about chickens, so if you want you can contact me.

The eggs we eat are normally unfertilized. Those chicken lay eggs regardless of any rooster presence. The yolks are also inside the egg. Yolks are inherent parts of the egg whether it is fertilized or not.
Normally produced commercial eggs fall under this scheme.
