Officially, peanuts are legumes.
They are like nuts, beans and seeds.
Fruit is the part of a plant that contains the seeds--this includes various "vegetables" such as cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, pumpkins etc.
Vegetables are those parts of a plant (leaves, stems, roots, tubers) that are eaten.
Although peanuts, beans, peas etc, are in a sort of distinct catagory of their own, they are much closer to fruits than veggies.

Yep, peanuts are in with the dry beans and stuff. A protein food, counts toward the meat category. And by the way, contrary to a previous answer, veggies DO have seeds also.
I would say that fruits grow on trees, and veggies are grown out of the ground, but I don't know if that's exactly right.

Fruits are the ripened reproductive bodies of a plant, which bear its seeds.
Vegetables are various herbaceous plants cultivated for their edible part(s) - such as the fruit of a tomato, root of the beet, leaf of spinach, seeds of bean plants, or the flower buds of broccoli or cauliflower.
Legumes are the fruit or seed of any of various bean or pea plants consisting of a two-valved case that splits along both sides when ripe and having the seeds attached to one edge of the valves.
Peanuts are the underground pod of of the peanut vine !

Fruit comes from the reproductive parts of a plant and a vegetable comes from any part of the plant besides the flower. Some vegetables are actually the fruit part, though. Nuts are seeds I believe. It is all very confusing because it all relates to plants. I think we should call them "sweet fruits," "unsweet fruits" and "seed fruits" because we've got it wrong and it's all different parts of the same kind of thing.
