I would say that it depends on what you are looking for (i.e. active nightlife, accepting community, progressive states, etc) I have lived in Chicago, IL and Atlanta, GA and find that in both areas I had places that were accepting and comfortable and places that were not. I know that Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN have accepting and strong gay communities. I think that the biggest difference between some place like San Francisco versus a smaller town is the balance between acceptance and judgment or hatred. In Atlanta, I have to be more aware of where I am or what part of the city I am in whereas in San Francisco that was much less the case. Also, many states have passed very restrictive legislation in the last few years, which makes it harder to have benefits, support and rights as a gay couple so it is really important that you look at that too and make sure that you take the necessary steps to protect yourself legally.
Hope that helps! You can also check our www.hrc.org for other resources on states and communities or do a web search for the city you are looking for and the gay community

I've seen a few surveys on this subject, and a couple cities make the lists every time they're done. Portland, OR has a large population and is a laid-back kind of town. The same goes for San Diego, CA, but San Diego is probably just as expensive as the Bay Area. The Palm Springs area is nice if you can stand the heat. Key West, FL is a good choice, but is also expensive.

I'm gay and I live in Boston Ma. I think it's great myself. There's alot of bars in Boston, Then it's close to Rhode Island too. Then it's only 2 hours away from Provincetown which is down the Cape. We would love to have you here. You don't have your email hooked up. Boston is a beautiful city, the changing of the seasons. They also have a gay bar in Boston that is just for women. The restaurants here are alot of Italian Restaurants. To live in the city is expensive but if you live outside the city you will find that is cheaper. What school are you looking into. You can get married to the same sex here too. Boston, I feel is very liberal towards the gay lifestyle. So what school are you looking into here in Boston? Any other questions feel free to email me.

I've never been to San Fransisco so can't comment, but New York has a huge gay population and a nice bar scene. It's always great for me to go up to the city and see that there's more to America than the rural south.

If you are a lesbian, Portland, OR is the best overall city to live. This is based on cost of living, presence of community, etc. Portland is lesbian heaven.
As a gay man, Atlanta, GA is a great place based on the same factors listed above. Overall they are both great cities.

Wherever you can be happy.
It depends on what you want: a large gay community around you, if public transportation is important, a moderate cost of living.
The past few years, many gay couples have been moving to smaller towns within a reasonable commuting distance to a larger city. Many have even been moving to very small towns, indeed.

I've heard that Atlanta, GA has a strong gay community. Actually Atlanta Pride is coming up this weekend, too!

Well, I'm guessing it isn't Small Town, Texas. People on the East Coast seem pretty liberal. New York State maybe?
