If you are doing these things on Microsoft word you can use the equation editor.
Click on INSERT
Click on OBJECT
Scroll Down to Microsoft Equation 3.0
You can type all the symbols, greek letters, etc.

If you have Windows XP. Start. All Programs. Accessories. System Tools. Character Map.
Make sure the font is on a normal font like Times New Roman or Arial. Then scroll to the bottom of the window and voila!

other than using Character Map
square root = sqrt
cube root = cbrt
Exponent = x^n, whereas n is the exponent
If you are talking about Logarithms for the subscripts, i just use.
log(base y)x or log(y)x
As for the others, you can you Character Map
² for square
³ for cube
½ for sqrt
Σ for summation, which is found under Windows : Greek using the character map
θ for theta
π for pi, but i juse use pi

depends on the software, otherwise here ae some text representations:
sqrt = square root
^ = symbol for an exponent, ie x^2 is x squared
int = integral
sum = summation

use the ANSI character set. Do this by holding down while typing in a number. try it with a normal number and with a number preceded by 0.

If you are using Microsoft Word then you can go to Insert Tab and click on Symbols. Whatever symbol you wat, insert that in. There should be all the symbols you are asking for.
