what makes farts smell is H2S and other gases. If let under water they can "dissolve" so the smelly gases don't come to the surface.

Actually, I havent noticed that coz I dont pay much attention to farts BUT(t) it could that the smell molecules get glued to water before surfacing as pleasant bubbles. They lose their freshness through watery media.

I'm not sure but I can tell you that when I have to expel - I spread my cheeks and let the dry stale gas flow out - along with a few logs.
