They made that official statement today by saying that they are well deserved. After the U.S.-Italy game every commentator stated that it was a complete joke. That South American ref shouldn't have even been out on the pitch because he was banned from officiating the last World Cup. Other South American refs agreed that he was incompetent and had made numerous poor calls in South American games. He had a history of inconsistency. No reasonable person would make the statement theat FIFA did. Even the organizer Franz Beckenbauer (probably spelled incorrectly) said that there was entirely too many yellows. It was irresponsible for FIFA to make that statement today. Many fans expected punishment to be dealt out by FIFA and FIFA took a huge step in the other direction by showering incompetent refs with praise. Something smells fishy here.

Please put your team biases aside and concentrate solely on the officiating in the entire World Cup. Please no slurs or hatred towards the U.S. team. Thank you.

I've played for twenty some years and am still playing. I don't have any problem at all with the officiating in this years World Cup. Overall, after nine World Cups I can say the officiating so far this year is excellent and the referees are steering the game by the rules of the game.

It's not a perfect world and not all referees are near perfect. Great teams and sound players read referees the same way they read a fast pitch and tight defense. You adjust your game. If you can't anticipate how the referee is going to rule your action then perhaps you are in the wrong game or even the wrong profession.

Ultimately, FIFA appears to have the game's best interest at heart, especially when defending it's referees. If the teams don't like it, they can always withdraw. No-one is forcing them to play by the rules.

Eventually the day will come where officiating is near fully automated and people will wonder what became of the fifth element.

Honestly what can you do? The refs control the game. Even if there was a punishment given to the ref of the US vs. Italy game it wouldn't change the score of the game or the fact that the US now needs a 5 point lead to stay in the World Cup. I know it's bullshit, but there isn't much that we can do, other than complain.

FIFA tooks these steps in an effort to reduce time wasting that adds to the extra added minutes. I agree that the yellows/red have gotten completely out of hand. Some of the team lineups would be severely affected and this might lead to claims of "what could have been." It's too bad that some of these players haven't learned either - they should be extra cautious.
Still FIFA went overboard and should pay attention to the many complaints.

It's ridiculous...and really takes away from a sport being showcased to the world.

I just saw a Togo player tripped in the penalty box...no whistle.

FIFA's comments are just arrogant. Furthermore, the more calls the more players are diving after barely being touched.

Last World Cup featured bad officiating...this one may get worse.

It's really a shame too.

They are justified but they are makiing some pussy calls. They are giving yellow for a tackle and a red for elbowing. FIFA should change some of that rules. I also think players are taking advantage of the fouls to stale time. Player gets in the chin and they sit for like 2 mins. They are wearing chin guards.

"every commentator stated that it was a complete joke"

please don't use what those whiny american commentators say as a reference.

They have NO IDEA what the heck they are talking about.

those red cards were well deserved as anyone who really knows soccer will know - and the only fans who expected any punishment were probably some US fans.

the red cards in the usa game were all perfectly good decisions. the first red for italy was an obvious elbow to the face. the first usa tackle was studs showing and could have broke the ittalians ankle, automatic red card. and the second red card for usa was two blatant yellow card offences. quit yer whinging

I agree. Seems the Ref could MAYBE be a little Anti-U.S.? Easy way to show your "dis-pleasure", by making questionable calls.

De Rossi (Italy) deserved a red card. The 2 americans deserved yellow, not red.

FORZA ITALIA!!

Yeah, you'll know who's the big cahuna in the field.
Most cards not justified...like for speaking out ur mind.
At this rate, no African team will make it to semis and beyond.
