It's because over the years there have been many, I mean, many player managers, especially in the early days and they would wear the uniform because they would also play the game. This tradition just kind of stuck. A few managers over the years have worn suits, especially Connie Mack, but that was pretty much the minority.

Baseball used to have player/coaches who would insert themselves into the lineup, thus needing to wear a players uniform to do so. While that hasn't happened in quite some time (was Pete Rose the last one to do that?), the tradition has continued. Because of the fact managers used to play so they carry that tradition. And the fact they sit in a dugout in the burning sun, imagine having on a tuxedo!

there used to be a comiedien who talked about this in his act; : "hey casey"[ casey stengle; a very famos, very old.. very good manager], "whats with the uniform? do you think you're gonna get in the game today?".... it was pretty funny.
i've been around amiture basebal a l o n g time, i've even seen some little league coaches do it?!?!? but other than tradition[ and baseball is great mainly because of all it's tradition] i dont have an answer for this... just thought i'd tell the joke..... p.s. probably the last and deffinately the most famose manager to wear "civies" was connien mack... he also wore a straw hat.

It's tradition. However, I would assume it's because baseball is the only sport where the coaches are allowed on the field during play.

I'll answer your question in part by asking another. What would be the purpose of a football coach standing on the sidelines wearing pads and a helmet?
The same goes for hockey.

The player/manager angle is the correct one. I think the last manager to NOt wear the uniform was Connie Mack of the Philadelphia A's, he managed from 1901-1950.

managers USED to play in the games as well... however can you imagine baseball coaches wearing anything else anyway... a suit and tie in the dugout... nah... sweatpants and a t shirt... a little too casual... the baseball uniform just seems to fit
