Getting motorbikes on hire for travel across India may not be feasible. Alternatively, you may buy a second hand bike, use it for 2 months and sell it off after your excursion.

Your budget may be just fine per person but don't expect too much comforts in this budget. If you are a foreigner, take a local companion for the trip. Safety may not be a concern but local companion would be useful on so many counts.

Undertake your journey after monsoon and plan it well before starting. Cover North India first as the weather after monsoon would be pleasant before getting cold.

Most of the servcies of tourism are un-organized, so you will do well with a smart local companion. Always use sealed bottled water for drinking, food should be fresh - whatever you take. Avoid carrying too much cash in person and use credit/debit cards, use Bank ATMs.

Regarding places to see, you can list your interests and accordingly select the places. India has a lot of variety to visit and enjoy places. A month or 2 is too short a period to see whole of India unless you want to be on the roads for most of your time. Choose one or two regions and explore them fully or choose places of interest in one direction and see for yourself how much can you cover.

I have travelled aroun India a lot and I would not recommend you drive unless you have had years of experience and nerves of steel. They overtake an both sides and will cut you up as a matter of course. Then you will also have to look out for the camels ,wild dogs ,horses, elephants and the very many cows that roam the streets and that includes the cities. The so called motor ways arnt bad but if you are on 2 wheels you will have to look out for holes in the road especially at night as there is little to no strret lighting.|You can get cheap accomodation but you will have to share it with the bed bugs.Train trvel is good but only if going 1st class its not expensive but you have to book tickets a month in advance to be sure of getting a seat,Never, never travel 2nd or 3rd classyou will get so hot and ill and thats a promise. If you do go travel to Delhi,Jaipur and Aggra(Taj Mahal) a dthen go to Goa for the lovelly beaches to chill out as you will need it.Goa also has the only budget hotels that I would risk staying in.Have fun but be careful you will be seen as the rich westerner and they are extreemly poor so make your own conclusions!
