Short answer: as a central nervous system stimulant, it increases alertness and general body coordination while also causing restlessness, a decrease in fine motor coordination, headaches and occasional dizziness. Oh yes, and it acts as a diuretic, so it increases urinary output for a while.

Long answer: Caffiene appears to act as an adenosine suppressor; being functionally similar to the amino acid adenosine, it binds to adenosine sites on the surface of cells without activating them, thus suppressing the function of adenosine. Adenosine acts to regulate nervous function, suppressing potentials across synapses. This results in a release of adrenaline into the system, while simultaneously suppressing cAMP, itself an adrenaline suppressor, thus amplifying the effect of adrenaline and norepinephrine on your body.
