I know, it probably seems like an over-broad and silly question to ask...but just how DOES someone get into casting?

I know I'd very much like to be involved in the film industry, whether as writer, director, producer, casting or musical arrangement...if not casting, can anyone recommend how to go about getting into any of the other aspects? Preferably without mentioning film-school. Also bear in mind that I'm in Britain.

...I think that's about it :D cheers!

My daughter works for a casting director in Kansas City, Missouri. She got a university degree in communications with an emphasis in theatre. As part of her studies, she worked interships with the Missouri Film Office and with the casting director that she works for now. The internship led to her current position. Call casting directors in your area and ask if they offer internships. Personal contact (who you know) seems to be more important than education in that business.

Start by being a gopher or an assistant in production. Work your way up. I don't think there are any shortcuts here and there really is no school for this. Be informed, be educated about film, favorite directors and current productions. Be persistent, honest, dependable and willing to go more than the extra mile.

Good luck.

My dream of dreams is what you`ve just asked. Casting Director.

Get a nice office, beautiful secretary at front desk, lots of film/trade magazines scattered around, pretending to be very busy. Get a comfortable couch, with mellow lighting, a whiff of perfume,a fridge, Ac, Tv and home theatre thrown in. A dummy camera on a tripod.

then wait.

The big bad wolf will surely get some little red riding hood.

Thats what I have heard these Casting Director types doing.

If you live in a large city with many talent agents and casting directors, mail your resume to them and say that you are available to work as an intern (that means FREE, you wan't get paid.) That is how many people get into the field, it is a very long process, i.e, many years of interning.
