I thought that was the case, but last year, I planted annuals, and they are back. I'm not complaining, just confused. The reseeding makes sense though.

Annuals are planted each year, hence the name. They do not come up again the following spring, except for cases in which they reseed themselves. (Seeds fallen from last year's flowers may survive the winter and sprout in the spring - but they will definately not look as nice.) If you are looking for flowers that come up year after year, look into perennials.

Annuals are planted once a year. However, there are some plants advertised as annuals that will reseed themselves. It depends on what part of the country you're in too. Some plants that are annuals in some parts of the country, are perrenials in others. Just depends on the climate.

In my experience, I'm planted snapdragons and violas that should have died off in the cold, harsh winter here, but amazingly, they came back the following spring.

Annuals have to be planted every year. They grow fast and usually bloom all spring, summer and fall but they don't come back every year. If you want a plant that will give you years of enjoyment plant perennials, they come back year after year. If you have friends that have been gardening for several years talk to them. Nearly all of us old gardners like to share our plants since they do have to be divided every couple of years. Some annuals re-seed themselves and depending on the climate you live in they can do really good.

Not all annuals last the whole season. Pansies are an example of that. Most however are good for the season

Annually - hence the term. Every year.

They only last one season, so you have to replant more once a year.
