Lets be a little bit more laymen...
SAP is the provider of a business integrated system solution. In other word, is a company who built a computer software that allows large companies (clients includes townships, universities, corporations... the largest on the planet) to manage their business and consolidate their data.
Example: you have a factory. You want to know how your sales impact the need for building new objects, and how this will impact the purchasing department.
You have a Sales system, integrated with a Factory Management, which will tell you how many spare parts you need to order to produce the items that you want to sell. In addition, you could have a Human Resources part, dealing with your employees data, a Financial part for all chart of accounts, the whole thing in an integrated and unique system.
It is true that these systems are expensive, at purchasing time and for installation, because they require lots of time and extensive consultancy.
