My little one started grinding his about that age. I did some reading on it and it is normal. Teeth are new to them and they are experimenting with them. They find out they make noises and stuff. Most children grow out of this. My child did not, he is 3 now. I tried all I could to get him to stop but it didn't work. If it continues, talk to a peds dentist about it.

It's normal, really there is nothing you can do about it. My son is 9 months old and does the same thing (Gah! it's like nails on a chalk board!). When he starts grinding his teeth, I try and distract him to get him to stop. (It only works 50% of the time) Babies do this because there is something new in there mouth that they are not used to and are just "exploring" i guess you would call it. He will stop on his own eventually. Good luck!

My son did the same thing at that age. He's almost a year now, has more teeth, and doesn't do it any more. His Doc said it might be because he was trying to put pressure on his gums( it's what they do before any teeth come in to get them to break thru the skin) but his teeth were in the way. Who knows. Try the little puff treats....maybe he is asking for some more solid foods in his own way.

My son did that a lot and he is now turning 4.
1. It is very bad on their baby teeth, because their teeth are not strong like adults.
2. Find why he is doing. My son did it out of anger and bordem.
3. Is he teething?
4. Give him a distraction, like a sippy cup top to munch or teething toy or the best for me was a snack bag or container that he can come to "his table" any time he wants.
5. Good luck and try not to show irritation, he may do just for your attention. good or bad.

My 9 month old is doing the same thing right now. And while it makes me want to scream, it will stop soon. It is a new sound that they have learned to make and they will keep doing it until they find something new or tire of it. My boys did it also. It will last for a month or so then end as quickly as it started.

yes too funny that I found your question b/c i was going to post the same one today. my baby is 10 mos old and does the same thing. Hes actually wearing down his bottom teeth and it sounds terrible.
I have been ignoring it b/c I am afraid that bringing attention will onyl make him do it more (if that is possible) I also have been trying to disract him from it (not working to well though)
I am guessig that its normal just b/c what are the chances of our children both doing it around the same age if it was not typical?? I am going to call his doc today, i'll update w/ any info I find

My 6 year old still grinds her teeth and loud enough to wake other people up.
Take him to the dentist and have his teeth checked tell the dentist he grinds. Mine told me it was normal and to just watch her teeth to make sure she's not damaging them.
However my daughter was a preemie, that opens up and whole new bag of normal behaviours.

It's totally normal. My 10 month old daughter still does it. It means they are getting ready for more textured foods. The "What to Expect the First Year" book is a great reference book for all moms.
