in Greek legend, large island in the western sea (the Atlantic Ocean). Plato, in his dialogues the Timaeus and the Critias, tells of the high civilization that flourished there before the island was destroyed by an earthquake. The legend persists, and societies for the discovery of Atlantis remain active. Plato described Atlantis as an ideal state, and the name is considered synonymous with Utopia . Francis Bacon called his account of the ideal state The New Atlantis.
This will always remain a mystery until someone can prove beyond any doubt that Atlantis really existed or was a ledgion all along.

Atlantis is an island whose existence and location have never been confirmed. The first references to Atlantis are from the classical Greek philosopher Plato, who said it was engulfed by the ocean as the result of an earthquake 9,000 years before his own time. Most scholars now regard Plato's description of Atlantis as fiction, though it is often thought that Plato drew upon memories of past events such as the Thera eruption or the Trojan War. Other scholars argue that Plato's account was inspired by events of his own day.

Until Atlantis is actually discovered it is only a myth and a theory. I like to think that it is there and that Atlantis coincides with the great flood of the bible. It could have been the opening of the Mediterranean sea which would put Atlantis on the bottom. This is just wild conjecture on my part.

The story goes that Atlantis was peaceful and prosperous, until they began to hunger for power and greed. So then, the gods decided to plunge them into the sea. Basically, a giant wave hit them and they sunk to the bottom of the ocean. No one really knows where it is, but the freaky thing is, if people actually FIND Atlantis, while exploring or whatever, they come back and it isn't there any more...

Plato said that Atlantis was beyond the pillars of Hercules. Most seem to think that the Pillars of Hercules is the rock of Gibraltar. But if you sail beyond the rock of Gibraltar, you end up in the Atlantic where there is no land and never has been.
I think the Pillars of Hercules is what is now known as the Golden Horn separating the Med from the Black sea.
Plato said that the people of Atlantis spoke a very different dialect to Greek. The people who live in the vicintiy of the Black sea certainly do.
When technology overtakes humankind it has the potential to wipe out humankind. This is what happened to the Atlantians. So we better all be very careful.

There is an island (what's left of it) in the Mediterranean called Santorini or Thyra. It was clobbered by volcano and earthquake a few thousand years ago. Many scholars believe that Plato used this story as a basis for a parable, that of Atlantis. This is the simplest explanation for the story (of which Plato is the sole source) which takes into consideration all the known facts.

Yes Atlantis existed, Atlantis is located in the Bermuda Triangle, the city was abandoned and its inhabitants disbursed throughout the world. Atlatis was technologically advanced in medicine and with information storage. The Pyramids in Egypt are an example of there technical genius and when we are able to reach their technical genius we will be able to retrieve the information that is store in the pyramid bricks.

According to Edgar Cayce (pronounced "Casey") Atlantis did, in fact exist.
It was a large continent almost spanning the North Atlantic Ocean.
The Azores are its only remnant.
And the expected world upheaval will raise it again, with the Western US sinking into the Pacific.
Check him out on the Web.
In refutation of Susan Davies (above): The Pillars of Hercules were Gibraltar on the north, and the tip of Morocco on the south, the gateway from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean.

Plato was the first person to talk about Atlantis. There is no mention of it before him. See below for what Plato said.
