There are plants called brooms. The ones I am familiar with are called scotch brooms. They come in few different colors, yellow, lavender and red. (The red broom's flowers are actually red/gold). I live in the northeast, and they are fairly common shrubs. In the winter, they loose their leaves, but their thin branches remain green, giving them an impression of being evergreen. Absolutely beautiful when in full bloom, which unfortunately only lasts a week or two in the summer. Search for the Latin word "Cytisus" if you need more information.

It is a plant of scottish origin, and it's called "Red Scotch Broom - Cystius Scoparius".
Funnily enough, it blooms predominately yellow, but below are some varieties which have more red in them than the basic scotch broom.
"'Andreanus' - A bicolor with red and yellow petals. An upright form to 8' tall."
"'Burkwoodii' - An upright form with red-brown flowers. A vigorous, bushy grower."
"'Lena' - Red and yellow petals. Only 3' to 4' tall and wide. A C. dallimorei hybrid."
"'San Francisco' - Flowers are dark red."
