The most perfect gift for a first-time mom and baby (only from personal experience) is the following:
For Baby: By the time baby is born, first time mom's have almost everything they could need in order to clothe, bath, cuddle and wrap the little one, but something new moms very seldom think about is a proper night light. You get the most adorable night lights now - some come with soft beautiful music and the ability to project figures onto a wall... giving baby something to keep him busy with until he falls asleep again. They are usually fairly inexpensive as well.
And for mom - everyone always focuses on the newborn and since he/she is no longer in her tummy, mom tends to get little attention after the birth, so I have found that a good present for a new mom is a nice bottle of wine and some stunning fragrant bath salts and oils. You have no idea how much she'll enjoy a long bubbly soak while hubby tends to the little one for a while.
Good Luck

DON"T BUY CLOTHES
I just had a baby well, my wife had her, and we got tons of clothes. She was full term but small healthy but small. All the clothes we got in 3 to 6 months won't fit till the end of summer then she has a few short weeks before winter and needs warmer clothes. If she has a registry get something nice and cheap off of there if not. Gift cards or even they have little kits that have all this first aid stuff for babies at Babies R US. That is nice and she will love it win she thinks something is wrong and does not have to run out to the store to get stuff

Anything would be great, kinda hard to get something personnel when you dont even know the child yet but my idea with you is to buy a cute picture frame that the mom can put the picture in also write the baby a letter so that years from now the baby can read it and know how loved he is. Have the mom put the letter of you in back of the picture in the frame. Make it more better have the picture in the frame just be of you and baby.

Well one gift that was so helpful to my Aunt when she had her baby girl was a crate to put in the dishwasher that hold the nipples and the caps and stuff for the bottles and a bottle brush. She got so many Feltmen Brothers dresses at her shower and special things that she never used once. It may not seem special but after the long nights of waking up and thousands of bottles to wash and clean she will love it.

My friends daughter just had a baby and i am making her a scrapbook of when she first started showing until she had the baby. Actually, she just had the baby last Thurday and I am waiting for her mother to get the photos developed. you could even use the invitation tot he baby shower in the album. I got her a few clothes from the store for the shower, but told her I was making her something and she would get it soon. She thinks it's a blanket. Anyway, hope this idea helps.

A Tiffany sterling silver teether. A lot of people think that they are only for keepsakes and not to be used, but in fact they are meant to be chewed on by the baby. The metal holds the cold from the refrigerator for a nice long time and soothes the baby's gums for longer. Babies LOVE them and moms' always come back for a new one for each new child(i work for the company:)). Because it is sterling and a Tiffany piece, it is a great keepsake and can be handed down through generations.

1.at walmart or baby store they make gift baskets.
2.Also, ask her if she did a baby registry at a store.
The baby registry will give a list of things she specifically wishes for her child and it will tell you where in the store it is located. (walmart has baby registries)
3.You could throw her a baby shower and invite her fav. people.
*Dont forget the games its the best.*
4.Also, at the shower or on your own time, you could go around and ask everyone to write a special wish list for the baby when he is older and for the mom.
Ex: "I wish you the best luck with your son and your future together. Plus, I wish your son to reach his dreams."
5. I have also found if you buy a teddy bear (or any animal), and put on a picture of the baby scanned onto a white t-shirt with a blue bow it is a big hit.

when you go to a store get all the little things that people would normally forget. Getting ready for my kids to come you don't think of Denstin, Baby oil, baby towels for bath time, diapers are the big thing, also get a wipe warmer; if the baby could speak he would definately thank you for that.
For something real special I would go and have a blanket put on order then when the baby is born put his information on it like his name, weight, height, and date of birth. Hope that helps.

My Aunt is having a baby in a few weeks and I was also stuck! Then I found this website: http://www.baybeelove.com/page10.html
It is based in England, but you can get a handmade personalized "lovie" bunny or bear for about $12- and that includes shipping from England. They're inexpensive and VERY cute!

nappies and formula never go astray.
but like the idea of and got one, its cute, its called the magic bonnet, (made from a handkerchief) comes with a card
its a little bonnet that can be worn home from hospital or on the christening day, then packed away till wedding day. with the stitches cut, and ribbons pulled , a wedding handkerchief it will be. i think its a cute idea
good luck with your decision
