each man paid 23.5 but they both got the 1.5 back, so to the $47 you andd not the money kept by the keeper but the money got back by the men who paid for it. so it would be 47 + 3 = 50 it's all there. the money kept by the keeper is in the $47.00 ( 45 for the gift and 2 for him self)

the item price is $45 but the shopkeeper takes $2 more as the profit, just say. So the total price will be $47, the buyer paid $25 each and get $1.5 refund means they only paid for $23,5 eah and $47 in total.
So, its still $50.
The two friends money spent for the item is only $47 with $3 refund ($1,5 each). The one dollars is going nowhere.

The fallacy is assuming the amount spent by the 2 is still $50.

They spent a total of $47, because the shopkeeper kept $2. There is no $50 amount left to use.

No. You should not ADD the $2.00 to $47 that is returned to the customers (2 x $23.50). This is just confusing. You have to SUBTRACT the $2.00 from the $47, so each customer will contribute $22.50, to the total of $45.

In calculating this problem, I found that each had contributed $25.00 at first. If the shirt only cost $45.00, then the total each would be $22.50, meaning that each should have gotten $2.50 back. Since the shopkeeper kept $1.00 from each of them, each friend was refunded $1.50.

$45 = $22.50 + $22.50

$22.50 + $1.50 = $24

$24 + $24 = $48

$48 + $2 = $50

No missing dollar :-D
