positively charged protons (in the nucleus), neutrally charged neutrons (also in the nucleus) and negatively charged electrons (which circle around the nucleus) ....also they have "discovered" other matter in the atom called quarks and a couple other similarly named items....but it is generally accepted that protons, neutrons, and electrons make up an atom....

There are tons of drawings of atoms flying around today, but probably none of them are proportional. Most of us know that atoms have a central weight called the nucleus, consisting positively charged protons and negatively charged neutrons. Around the nucleus is the electron cloud, where neutral electrons move around. of Most drawings imply that the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus is not too much bigger than the nucleus itself. This is not true. If the period at the end of this sentence represented the nucleus of an atom, the electron cloud around it would be bigger than your computer screen. In fact, the nucleus only makes up 1 10,000th of the entire diameter of an atom.

Most atoms are composed of three types of subatomic particles which govern their external properties:

electrons, which have a negative charge and are the least massive of the three;
protons, which have a positive charge and are about 1836 times more massive than electrons; and
neutrons, which have no charge and are about 1839 times more massive than electrons.
