Dog: 36.1%
Cat: 31.6%
Pet bird: 4.6%

Wow, that is a tough one as our choice of pets is as varied as our taste in clothing or food, lol. That really is going to depend on the individual. I find that dog breeds that are very popular are english bull dogs, Cavalier king charles spaniels, teacup yorkies, labs, sheapards, it all depends on taste & quality of dogs offered.
In Cats, the persian breed always has many takers, but the more discriminating seem to go for spots & a wilder look, ie Egyptian Maus, Ocicat, Bengals, Savannahs, Safaris, etc. But again it is all a matter of personal preference & A good quality animal of any breed or species is appreciated.
Chinchillas, Sugar GLiders, Hampsters, Gerbils & Guinea Pigs are all very Popular with the pet store shoppers as are fish , birds & hedgehogs. City dwellers & country dwellers often have different pets due to space & city ordinances.

I think dogs are first, then cats but Americans will have just about any kind of pets. These are not as popular as dogs and cats but I know people have snakes, turles, rats,birds,guinea pigs(cavies).
Some people try yo make wild animals pets to.
