I didn't know whaling was still popular until recently. It's very sad. I see whales as a sort of spiritual creature of the sea.

I don't understand it, Japan has said that they have stock piles of whale meat as it is, why do they need to kill more. Whaling brought most whale populations to the brink of extinction and anything that puts any extra pressure on the slowly recovering populations should be prevented. At the moment Japan claims its only killing the whales as part of "scientific research" but this is absolute c ra p, they are trying to start commercial whaling again and may even ignore international law in their pursuit of this. I think penalties should be very severe if they try to.
Arguements that say whaling is part of japanese heritage and culture are pathetic, Whales are part of the Earths natural heritage and Japan have no right to finish of the last remaining animals.

I think that if they would stick with the low limits they have been using, instead of increasing it like they're doing, it wouldn't be a huge deal for the ecosystem. Many whale populations have been increasing lately, but they need a longer time to continue this increase and stabilize their numbers. Whaling often hurts populations by taking out the biggest or strongest members of the group, and this can eventually effect the entire population's overall size/strength. But whaling IS a tradition that goes back a long ways, and while I personally don't like it, I don't think they need to completely stop. They just need to limit themselves.

i think it is ridiculous partly because not many people eat whale and its sick. also it could ruin the Eco system because it could throw off natures equilibrium. with out an equal balance of whales different populations of other creatures could increase or decrease. which will begin to effect everyone in the long run. after all we are all connected.

it's senseless, however, it's not just the whales, shark "finning" is more horrible, the sharks are caught, have their fins cut off and dumped back into the ocean to drown. Sharks are becoming endangered. Whales are making a comeback. Sharks aren't cute and cuddly so I guess no one cares, I do though.
