I just went camping with the girl scouts over the weekend. I had no idea before this week what a sit upon was. A sit upon is a big, heavy duty bucket with a lid that the girls sit on around the camp fire. They also have handles on them to make it easier for the girls to carry (sometimes it's a bit of a hike to get to the camp fire). Some of the girls even had buckets with little cushions that were somehow attached to the lids. Inside the buckets the girls store their muddy boots. The girls in each group decorate their buckets in some way. Our group used stickers and wrote their names on top.

I'd forgotten all about that! Back in the 50's the scout leader of our troop had us make our own sit-upons by stitching printed oilcloth around a few old magazines. We sat on those things whenever we were outdoors.

You brought back fond memories for me too. My situpon in Brownies (about a hunred years ago) was made from two quilted placemats. We put them together with a layer of cotton batting sandwiched inbetween. We stitched carefully around the edges and attached a tie to each side so we could tie it around our waist. This way, is was already hanging there, on, uh..., the back of our laps (LOL) while we were hiking and when we needed to sit down we automatically satupon it. Hope you have fun making yours.

Her Tuffet? Or that was really Little Miss Muffet that sat on her Tuffet...but I think Miss Muffet was a Girl Scout.

It's like a paper sack stuffed with newspapers. We made them in Campfire. They are used to "sit upon" at camp for campfires and such.
