As a pastor who includes prison ministry as part of my work, I would have to say that it stems from a childhood where there was too much violence in the home and too little love. Media exposure certainly has somethingthing to do with it, where killing is glorified over loving. Some people get the two mixed up---they think that they are doing the victim a favor (oe quite possibly God a favor) by torturing and killing people. Largely, it is an outgrowth of childhood, however. Children are heavily influenced by the behavior of their parents and by the environment that they live in and are educated in. I am around ghetto kids all the time, and I see a huge difference in their behavior vs. the behavior of kids in middle class and upeer middle class neighborhoods. Race and genetics have nothing to do with it: it is totally environmental. Sadism is a learned behavior like all emotional behaviors. Yes. we are born with the seeds of various behaviors in us, but as to whether the bad behaviors take over our lives depends upon the environment that we are raised in. Where God does not exist in the household, violence is most offten the behavior that will be exhibited. Where there is no father or father figure to rule the household, children will grow up lacking respect for authority. There must be a mother AND a father within the the physical household in order for children to have a chance at achieving balance in their lives. Jesus must be present also, else the parents will have no standard to guide them in raising the children. Jesus loves you and everyone else, and he died for all humankind. He wants you and your children to come to him, worship him, and receive all the fabulous blessings that he has to offer. One of those blessings is Godly children. Godly children normally do not end up in prison or dead before their time. If you are a parent or you want to be a parent, then begin to plan your life right now around Jesus Christ and God's holy word.

Have you ever won a contest? Been the best? Dominated in a test, race, drama recital? All of these touch our baser nature. The mad monkey who breaks free occasionally.
Beating someone past submission, beating them to hurt and cripple, shooting, stabbing whatever is just the vicious angry monkey. We don't really win when we beat or kill, but they lose. They lose. So we see ourselves as the victors! The champions!
Short rush at the expense of others.

It's human nature I guess. Releaving stress to impose it on others. Not nice.
Lucky for us most have morals of a kind and only beat and kill in computergames. In principal the same thing.
