I don't know that there is enough evidence of a physiological basis for us to discuss homosexuality in terms of a disease. This much I do know: if one has such desires, one should assume that they will not go away.
However, the major religions of the world do teach that we have a choice about what we do with those desires, and that our choice should be to refrain from acting on them(1). So there are two questions then:
1) Is it possible to acquire the ability to be attracted to members of the opposite sex if one does not already have it?
Often it is. But this cannot be the aim. It is a gift from God which will be given (or not - because some people are called to be celibate, in which case they don't *need* to be attracted to anyone at all!), at the time of His choosing.
Here is a list of links where you will be able to find, among other things, testimonies of people who made 'the big move':
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rossuk/h-exgay.htm
Not to mention I know some such people personally.
2) What if that doesn't happen? Or alternatively, what to do about the desires that are still there?
In order to live successfully without acting on your desires, you have to be *really* convinced that it's the right thing to do, it has to arise out of your relationship with God.
You need to realize that lust is not ultimately a sexual sin - it is simply a form of greed (short for 'idolatry').(2) So that the thing to do is occupy yourself with actively choosing to do the opposite: worship God - above all, by offering your body to Him as a living sacrifice(3) - as well as glorify Him and give thanks to Him(4).
And yes, if you do all this, you end up with either the ability to be married to an MOS; or with a beautiful life where you love everyone equally without lusting after anyone. Not a bad deal, I would say!
So, no, I would not call homosexuality a disease. People have various kinds of desires, and they act on them (or not) in various ways, and homosexuality is one of those choices.

How exactly would we define it as a disease?
The only symptom is that a person of one gender may take a preference to people of the same gender.
Considering the spectrum of how that works, we would likely be saying that the entire population has this disease.
By that point, it would be a question if it's a disease at all or simply a part of human nature.
It would be like calling wisdom teeth or blue eyes a disease.

Homosexuality is not a "disease" nor is it an aberration or a deviation.
The American Psychological Association, The American Psychiatric Association, and the governing body of the board of Pediatricians have all stated that being homosexual (gay or lesbian) is neither an aberrant sexual behavior or a sexual deviation. BTW, "disease" refers to a pathological (or biological) condition that adversely impacts the body.
Since a few of the answers here appear to come from so-called 'Christians' (or at the very least "faith based" responses whether Christian or not), below you will find a link that places homosexuality, or same-sex love, in true Biblical context.

Homosexuality is no longer considered a disease or disorder. It was removed from the American Psychiatric Associations list of disorders back in 1973. Many years of research have also concluded that homosexuality is in no way linked with any mental disorders, and that homosexuals can live happy and healthy lives.

Disease:
1. A pathological condition of a part, organ, or system of an organism resulting from various causes, such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress, and characterized by an identifiable group of signs or symptoms.
2. A condition or tendency, as of society, regarded as abnormal and harmful.
using these definitions - I suppose homosexuality shouldn't be considered a disease as it is not technically pathological or harmful. I would consider it a lifestyle choice.

A disease?
How would one "catch" this disease?
Of course it isn't. The American Medical Association does not list it as a disease. Neither does the Psychological experts.
Who, on earth, thinks it is a disease?

Homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, asexuality, heterosexuality, they're all OK! none of them are diseases, they're just the way people are. It's like saying that it's a disease if you prefer ice cream over hot chocolate in the winter. Some people just do, and though some might find it strange, it's totally fine.

It's as much a disease as heterosexuality, or breathing, or existence. Ignorance (not a disease) is the condition of being uninformed or uneducated. Seek counseling or gain some insight.

They are lifestyle (sexual) choices pure and simple.
I would recommend that that you read the King James version of the Bible. It contains the answers to your questions.
God the Father knew you before you we born in eternity past and when you were formed in your mother womb. We are born with a Soul that will live for eternity. We must decide as a free will agent to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior or not.
Our decision determines whether we spend eternity in Heaven or Hell.
I Pray that you make the right decision.
Jesus Christ Loves You.
God Bless you is my prayer.
David

No, it is a deception. The genitals determine if you are male or female. No one is gay it is a choice. God setup the world for you to date or to marry the opposite sex. If you are born with both genitalia it is the predominate one, the one that works, or it is determined what other characteristics physically that make them male or female. Homosexuality is a sin. But don't call anyone Gay because no one is gay.
