You could request that they take a sample of your amniotic fluid and test for the abovestated disorder.
Good luck.By the way it is common for a pregnant woman to have this fear for her unborn child health and most of the time the baby is fine..

Amniocentesis is a test to analyze the liquid (amniotic fluid) that surrounds your baby (fetus). Amniotic fluid contains cells and other substances that can give clues about your baby. Amniocentesis can be done after about the 14th week of pregnancy, when there is enough amniotic fluid for testing. It is done by inserting a needle through your abdomen into your uterus. Approximately 2 Tbsp (30 mL) of the amniotic fluid is collected and examined.
Amniocentesis is usually done between weeks 15 and 18 (during your second trimester) or later in your pregnancy.
Amniocentesis is performed for women whose pregnancies may be high-risk. These include women:
Over 35 years old.
With diabetes.
With other children who have a genetic problem.
With an abnormal triple screen test (alpha-fetoprotein, estriol, and human chorionic gonadotropin).
With Rh sensitization.
Amniocentesis in early pregnancy
Amniocentesis is usually done between weeks 15 and 18 to determine whether your baby has certain types of birth defects. Amniocentesis can also determine the sex of your baby.
Amniotic fluid contains cells that have been shed by your developing baby. These cells can be tested for more than 100 types of defects that are associated with inherited (genetic) diseases (such as Down syndrome or cystic fibrosis) or neural tube defects. Testing for these diseases is most commonly done between the 15th and 18th weeks of pregnancy, when the pregnancy can be ended if your baby is severely disabled. However, amniocentesis cannot detect many common birth defects, such as cleft lip, cleft palate, heart problems, and some types of mental retardation.

yes, they give you a ultrasound scan at around 12 13 weeks and measure the size of the head which will give you a farily good idea if its got downsydrome and also if you have got people in ur family with interlecual disabilites then they will more than likely give you another test where they take a sample from the atmoic fluid and that will tell excatly itf its got any serious disorders or disabilties, as for deformities they are pick up during a regular scan just by looking at the baby counting the fingers and toes and looking at the measurments

Yes! They do this through the use of blood testing and amniocentisis. Amniocentisis is when they go through your belly button and withdraw amnio fluid from around the baby and test it. Ultrasounds can also help identify birth disorders now too since they have better technology then before. Good luck and remember when in doubt ask your doctor. They know the answers.

Amniocentesis: This test diagnoses chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. It is generally performed during the 15th to 17th weeks of pregnancy. Using ultrasound as a guide, a needle is placed through the abdomen into the uterus to collect amniotic fluid for testing. Fetal skin cells floating in the fluid are obtained and cultured in a laboratory for evaluation of the chromosomes. Results of the studies are available in about two weeks. In addition, the fluid is tested for the level of alpha-fetoprotein, to detect a neural tube defect such as Spina Bifida. This test has a 1/200 risk of miscarriage.

They can know if something is going wrong or something may be wrong with the baby. Like the other person said through blood work. But I think they can also find out through like when they are giving you a sonogram at one of your check ups.

amniocentesis is a process of drawing out a small amount of the amnionic fluid in the sac that the baby is in, this fluid is tested and many birth disorders can be detected this way.

Yes, it's usually through blood testing and they will ask for your permission for such testing through forms during your pre-natal visits. Ask your doctor for details...
