The Moon's phases are caused by the angle to the Sun. At new Moon, the Moon is directly between the Sun and Earth, so the Sun and Moon are in the same place in the sky as seen from Earth and they both rise and set at the Same time. A full Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, so it rises when the Sun sets and sets when the Sun rises. Now a 4 day Moon is one that is 4 days past new. Since the Moon takes 28 days to orbit Earth, that means it is 4/28 of the way around the sky from the Sun, which means it would set 4/28 of a day after the Sun, which is about 3 1/2 hours. You may be thinking of the 24 day Moon, which in 4 more days will become a new Moon. That Moon would rise about 3 1/2 hours before the Sun, so it would only be visible very late at night, which is to say very early in the morning.

Starting with the full moon - A day or two before the "full moon" you will see the
moon rise just before sunset. At full moon it will rise as the sun sets, and of course
after the sun sets as the time goes on. Each night after, notice how the light on the
moon shrinks from full to last quarter and then to nothing (a 2 week time period).
Also during this time you will notice the moon "traveling" closer to the sun.
Two weeks from full moon (day may vary) look for the sliver of the moon just before sunset.
As the moon moves into NEW moon and you cannot see at all, watch for it to become noticable
as a sliver in the other direction as the sun sets. Follow the light on the moon as
it expands to first quarter and then to full. So you can actually see the moon and the sun
at the same time virtually most of the month.
