The more the better!

Honestly, the more lessons you have...the more conditions you'll experience (wet, busy, etc), the more situations you'll face, more skills you'll practice and learn...and the more judgement ability you'll subconsciously develop - all with the aid of an instructor to help...

Honestly, the more the better. It'll help in the long run...and you'll appreciate it...

Here in Australia, there is a campaign for learner drivers to encourage them to use a logbook and log at least 120 hours driving practice in ALL conditions before their licence test...while it'd be hopelessly costly to do all those 120 as lessons, a fair few should be - and the rest with your parents or an experienced driver...

Make sure you don't avoid bad situations...get in there, see them first hand.

Try driving at night...in bad weather, low visibility, gravel roads, freeways, cities, rural areas. Drive in places where you'll encounter trucks, emergency vehicles, slower/faster traffic, etc...it all helps!

Go to a defensive driving course if you can...they really help a lot...they basically showed me that I wasn't invincible and you'll really honestly be shocked at how easy it is to lose control...

As a rough rule of thumb you need 1.5 hours multiplied by your age, in driving lessons, to get yourself to test ready. This an average, see notes below.

So if youre 20 years old, 30 hours driving lesson.
30 years old... 45 hours
40 years old... 60 hours

If you are able to practice driving under supervision of an adult 21 years + who has a full license (UK law, other countries may vary regarding supervised learner driving), subtract number of hours to a maximum of say 20%.

If you have driven a motor vehicle of a similar class before, say on private land, subtract 20%.

30-hours should be about right to start off with, but some people need longer than others...... practise makes perfect.
The most important thing is choosing an instructor thats actually any good. Assuming your in the UK, I'd suggest either

The AA Driving school
http://www.theaa.com/drivingschool/index.html
or
BSM
http://www.bsm.co.uk/

For additional advice, check out http://www.2pass.co.uk
The most important thing to remember when first starting is pace yourself..... go slow at first until you get a feel for how the steering, brakes, throttle + clutch react to your inputs, then gradually build up from there. If you don't feel comfortable with how fast your going, back off 'cos it means you aren't ready to cope with it safely.

In Britain the DSA reckons about 54 lessons with an ADI is average. Ignore those who profess to have done it in 10 or so things have changed since they were learning. (Bet they couldn't pass their test now!)

Steal your parents car and drive to Mexico. Sell it to a chop shop and use that money to buy a donkey. The rest is up to you?
