‘Zombi’, or ‘Zombie’, is derived from the name of a Voodoo god of Niger-Congo origin - referred to by the Kongo word ‘nzambi’, which means ‘snake god’.
According to the tenets of 'Voodoo', which has been practiced for well over a millenium, a dead person can be revived by a Bokor or Mambo. Since they have no will of their own, zombies remain under the control of their reviver.
The ‘living dead’ zombie also appears in several other mythologies, worldwide - including those of Japan, China, the Pacific, India, and the Native Americans.
The first book to expose modern western culture to the concept of the zombie was The Magic Island by W.B. Seabrook in 1929.
Prior to the mid-1950s, zombies were usually presented as mindless thralls controlled like puppets by mystical masters.
...Sometimes the zombies were reanimated corpses, and sometimes living humans, but never malevolent by their own will. There was sometimes a strong sexual component in the depiction of these mindless beings.
The depiction of ‘undead’ zombies changed with the publication of ‘I Am Legend’ (1954) by author Richard Matheson : Its story was set in a future Los Angeles - overrun with undead cannibalistic, bloodsucking beings. One man is the sole survivor of a pandemic of a bacterium that causes vampirism. Continually, he must fight to survive attacks from the creatures.
Although ostensibly a vampire story, this work of fiction had enormous impact on the zombie genre film makers, particularly George A. Romero. His film ‘The Last Man On Earth’ (1964) starring Vincent Price is based on this story.
