The SIM card for a GSM phone is actually a subscriber identity module. This card is used to store programming for the phone as well as user information such as phone book entries. The advantage of this is that the card can be transfered to another phone if needed.

The SIM card for a GSM phone is actually a subscriber identity module.this stores the providers information . sotrage for address book, messages etc , also using this we can search the availability of other providers(that means is there range or not for all gsm providers)
