A hand is 4 inches not 5
A pony is defined by a small horse not more than 12.2 - 14.2 hands, as measured from the withers to the ground. The range of heights is because some larger breeds are still considered "ponies" (a variation within the standards of breeds)

a hand is 4 inches. a pony is any equine that is under either 14 hands tall at the withers or 14 hands 2 inches depending on the breed. morgans , arabs, and perhaps one or two other breeds are considered horses at 14 hands while everything else is at 14 hands 2 inches. just make things interesting there is also what is called a cob. its a stocky animal that may be between 13 and 15 hands but the smaller ones may be called a pony also. then there'e minature horses which may be under 30 inches. they are ponies but be prepared to duck if you call one a pony to its owner. you may be told its not a pony but they are no matter what the owners think.

A pony is 14.2 hands and under, and a horse is 14.3 hands and up. Ponies using have thicker body builds and short legs. Their are a few exceptions, depending on the breed of horse or pony. For example, Mustangs and Arabians are a couple breeds that can be under 14.3 hands and still be considered a horse.

A rectangle is a square but a square is not a rectangele...a pony is a horse but a horse is not necessarily a pony. Pony is height. 14.2hh and under is a pony, 14.3+ is a horse. Hieght is measured in hands (hh) which is 4 inches. THis is measured from the withers (where the neck meets the back) to the ground.

A pony is stockier, blah blah blah. Horses are over 14.2 hands, however horse breeds that an individual animal is under 14.2hh, is called a miniature horse. Ponies are not neccesarily all under 14.2hh though. they can be above and still be called a pony. I think Fell ponies are over that, not sure though... Anyways, the BREED determines whether it is a horse or pony.

It is the height that makes them a pony. Under 14 hands and they are considered a pony.
However people who play Polo will call all their horses ponys.
It is just what they do.

Ponies are smaller. Horses are classified as above 56" and a pony is anything below 56".
