Yes, some say that the entire concept of dragons is based on the impressive Komodo Dragons ... when humans first saw them, they were so impressed that the dragon mythology grew from these real life creatures ...

And another source of the dragon myth could be from dinosaur bones unearthed by unknowing humans. I wonder what they must have thought if they stumbled upon the fossil of something like a Pterodactyl. No wonder they imagined huge, flying lizards!

I am not sure about a fire breathing dragon. But there are animals such as Kammono Dragons that are true.

I agree that there are "modern" dragons, ancestors of the dinos, however its not Kammono, but Komodo dragon.
