Krypton orbited a red sun. Under the light of a red sun, Superman wouldn't have any special powers. However, on Earth, under a yellow sun, his different physical makeup gave him his powers.

What are you people stupid? Read the damn comic books. You know, get a life, turn off the computer, pick up a book. They're those things in libraries, you might have some in your house... yes it has something to do with the sun. As an infant, when his father sent him from the planet Krypton (which was destroyed by the way) his escape pod traveled too close to the sun, the radiation did not harm him but, it did cause a chemical reaction that when he hit puberty caused him to have some superhuman abilites. So no not everyone from Krypton has these powers, it doesn't come from his suit, or his crotch, (dirty mind). Good grief, pick up a damn book already. If you want to know.

On the Planet Krypton where Superman (aka Kalel) is from, The sun was red, not yellow, or a mixture like ours. On krypton, because of the red sun, they were all like you and me, just more technologically advanced. There planet was about to be destroyed, so his parents decided to send him to earth, a planet much like Krypton only with a yellow sun. Superman is what we call a "Solar Battery." He absorbs the yellow rays from the sun, and that gives him super powers. In one of the comics, Lex luthor creates a device to block out the suns yellow rays letting just the red rays to get through causing superman to not be super any more. so in short, he gets his super powers from The suns yellow rays.

if u watch Superman 2 with Chris Reeves, General Zod and his crew say that the yellow sun and its rays give them powers, only ppl from krypton have them. they DID NOT have the powers on their home planet.

I beleive it has something to do with the earths proxiamty to the Sun that has hightened his powers his orginal planet has a different location from the Sun before it blew up and he was sent away in a capsule by his parents to save him.

Our sun. He is originally from a planet with a red sun which took away the Kryptonians powers (they had a yellow sun at one time). Gold kryptonite can also take away his powers.
