I understand you completely because the country i'm fascinated with is Ireland though i've never been there, but hopefully I'm going there in december.
Now, a few words about Croatia:
Croatia is a small country in South East Europe. it has approx. 4,5 million inhabitants. Once it belonged to Yugoslavia, but in 1991 it gained its independence which was the reason for the four year war. luckily, it ended in 1995 but prior to that 1/3 of its territory was occupied. Before the war it was a famous tourist destination which was interrupted by the war. from 1991 (which is normal) till 2000 Croatia was somehow forgotten by tourists. the tourist boom started in 2000 when the world has rediscovered its natural and architectural beauties and the second most indented coastline in Europe because of its over 1000 islands. But not all are inhabited, just 66 of them
The most beautiful and popular regions are on the coastline - Istria and Dalmatia. I'm not that much acquained with Istria, that's why I'll focus on Dalmatia. dalmatia belonged in the to the Republic of Venece which co-existed with the Republic of Dubrovnik or also known as the Republic of Ragusa. from the 9th to the 19th century this state was known for its diplomacy and its civil society and it was the first or second state which recognized the indepence of the USA, a fact probaly no one in the USA knows. it was a developed country taking care of the social welfare of its citizens e.g. it had the first orphanage in this part of the world.
the most famous croatians in the past were Ruder Boskovic, a scientist, Marko Polo, no need to explain who he is, Nikola Tesla, scientist.
the most famous Croatians today are: Goran Ivanisevic, tennis player, won Wimbeldon with a wild card and a sort of national icon, Goran Visnic, playing Luka Kovac in E.R., Janica kostelic, a young skiit who has broken all possible records and of course our football players from France 98.
I don't know if you have heard of the movie Winnetou but it was shot in a national park the Plitvice lakes which is one of 10 national parks in Croatia.
There is much more to say about my country. hope that was sort of interesting and when you find some time, visit us, you won't be disappointed.

yes it absolutely beautiful. The people are really friendly the food is wonderful and the water is beautiful and clear but in the part where we were you needed to wear shoes before you swam in the sea but this was no major problem for us. The weather was also nice and warm. I'd love to go back again one day. There are so many places to visit and see whilst in Croatia and if you are coming from so far away you could make the day trip to Italy too.

The country political situation is stable. The currency used is Croatian Kuna and Euro. You can find cheap accomodation aroud 15-20 euros/day/person. I recommend you to visit Trogir which is very very nice city.

croatia is pretty 'famous' for europeans. it's a place where people go for hollidays - especially beach-hollidays.....it used to be a part of former yugoslavia but after the war it became independent. people are catholics, its pretty hot in summer and not too chold in winter.
croatins are usually pretty friendly and welcoming.
i've never been myself. how do i know all about it? my boyfriend is croatian :o)
it's sure worth a visit - i'll go there as soon as possible but not in august as it is peak season for tourists....
