We could simply close the window..What difference will it make.

If no one else can access your computer, closing the window does the job. But if anyone else even has a chance of accessing your machine, then you should sign out, or they could use your account.

Signing out tells the server you are done, if your on a network and don't sign out...others on the network can enter freely into your e-mail.

if you leaved yourself signed in, anyone else who can access your computer can access your account & can do what every he wants. so it is better to be carefull and don't leave computer without sign out.
You should always sign out when you are finished browsing the web to ensure that others cannot access your account.
