Depends what you mean by it.
I have been driving a cab for 23 years as a self-employed independent contractor.
I have enjoyed the independence I have setting my hours. Unfortunately or fortunately, I cannot set my own rates.
The trade off has always been trying to provide my own benefits. And it is very hard to do in my stupid business. Another issue is taxes. You have to be disciplined, and also may pay more depending on your local and state setup. In Philly, where residents pay about 4.5% income tax, for what I don't know, self employed will pay 8% to 9%.
The other barrier is government. Big time. I am trying to leave a business that I love because Philly's Parking Authority has taken over, and is unconstitutionally forcing us to install and pay for a GPS system that we do not want, and taking away our Independence with forced dispatch.
Hoping for justice.
Good Luck
