There are various theories.
Pheromones - they are scents produced by apocrine glands in the skin and trapped by the pubic hair. Though to attract members of the opposite sex consciously or subconsciously.
Reduce friction - thought to reduce friction between your legs and body along with hair in armpits etc
Finally, only one knows what plays on men's minds when they see female pubic hair!
Cilia - these are fine hairs in the lining of your nose for example, which prevent foreign material from getting in there. Pubic hair is supposed to do the same for ladies but not men.

It's for protection! So is yours! Back in the day, there wasn't underwear, and something had to cover such a sensitive area!
