What about the responses to the earthquake in Kashmir? Also, what do you think the West owes to the people of the world in the event of natural disasters?

One small comment. He asked if the Western response was adequate. He did not ask if the American response was adequate.

And to the question now. I believe the response of the western countries was adequate and immediate. Really large amounts of money and supplies were gathered. Unfortunately those money were not well spend and corruption once more stroke. There were many incidents of corruption in the UN for example and among the local population and leaders. Those resources were also poorly managed. Maybe that is the reason for this debate. The response was adequate but the results poor because of bad management.

What more do people want? If they want American money, then maybe they should change their gov't and economy to be like America. Even then it doesn't guarantee some disaster will kill them all. Nature does what it wants regardless of which nation you live in.

The tsunami and earthquake shouldn't be America's responsibility. My ancestors worked hard to make this land livable and so should theirs.

I can't afford to keep people alive all over the world every time a disaster strikes. American's can't play God, you know.

Gke: this is an AMERICAN board. WTF? Who do you think is going to respond to this question?

Australians donated over $110 million to the Tsunami effort.

Australians donated over $20 million for our own Cyclone Larry appeal.

The Australian Government donated $10 million to the Hurricane Katrina Appeal in addition to the funds donated by ordinary Australians.

I think we've done our bit financially...

exactly what we give them, how many countries stepped up after Katrina???? I mean really, it's not like we are an open pocket book! We help millions of people every day, and all they want is more, but when we have a disaster, where's the help?

the west doesn't OWE the rest of the world anything. However, the morally right thing to do is help your neighbours when they are in need.
