If your menopause starts before you are 40 years old, this is called Premature Menopause. Its causes are-
Premature ovarian failure, autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus.
Your doctors should be able to do some blood tests to determine what is causing the early menopause.
Women with ovarian failure have low estrogen levels and are therefore at risk of OSTEOPOROSIS. They therefor need Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to prevent fractures etc. Other features of menopause include hot flushes, thinning skin, breast atrophy, irritability among others. Obviously, in premature menopause, the features of the illness causing it may be present as well.
