They are both close in performance, but actually DSL is not as good as cable - but this needs qualified. Cable is faster especially if fiber optic is used, but often the ISP's control the upland and download speeds which makes cable about even with DSL. Cable can have an issue if all the cable users in close proximity to you are requesting heavy demands on the cable network. This is hardly ever the case, since there is so much broadband installed now. DSL, since it is phone line driven, can reach further to remote geographical areas that cable may not be installed as yet. But when all potential barriers are eliminated - cable will out perform DSL - but not by much. Either one is fine to use.

Digital Signal Line is running by the phone companies, AT&T had UNIX developed by Bell Labs in 1969 to run telephone switches.
So the phone companies have been using UNIX longer that anyone else, and the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) orginated in the UNIX world, being what became the standard (Made ol' Bill mad).
Cable companies are kindof new at this in comparison.
So even though hardware wise they can tough some great stuff, reality is that the industry does not have the background in keeping these things up 24/7/365 like the phone companies.
Hope that helps.

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line, unlike cable DSL in concept is supposed to be consistent in terms of speed -- depending on what speed your using -- it should stay constant therefore still faster than cable. Cable on the otherhand gets to be shared. Take for example a bandwidth of 100MBPS, in DSL 100 MBPS stays constant per user. In Cable 100 MBPS is 100 MBPS if there is only 1 user. As the users increase the bandwidth is divided in concept with the users. Therefore, 4 users in a 100 MBPS cable connection is actually 25 Mbps only. :D.. Even if you hover your mouse pointer over the blinking icon that shows your bandwidth when your connected. Check your speed at http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html. :D

Because DSL connection using higher frequency, wider band, so you can transmit data faster than cable connection
