I think you'll find that it is not just England; most western nations follow this custom, so there is no need for you to be surprised - except at the fact that you were not aware of this! There is no actual law that obliges the woman to assume her husband's surname, but most women do. NOTE. When I was at school (in England) the mothers of two of my Italian friends were called Mrs Magnani and Mrs Muzzolini, respectively, so were they merely following the British tradition?

I suppose it's like becoming his property. I kept my maiden name when I married the first time and put a hyphen, then his last name. So, I had a super long last name, lol, but kept my middle name.

My second hubby was adamant about me having his last name because it's traditional to change it, so I foolishly made the compromise. Now, I have to go through all the crap to change it back again.

I dont know what the real meaning is but I for one feel honored to have my husbands last name and to carry it with pride and dignity as it is the name of the one i love and am committed to. I want to carry his name and honor it and respect him for marrying me so this is just one of the gifts i can give him!

I changed mine because I didn't like my maiden name. Lots of women choose not to do it now a days. My cousins husband took her last name to carry on the family name. My moms brothers and sisters had all girls.

Don't know why you would still do it. Women no longer need to be defined as property of a man.

Its so they'll know who owns them. As you can see, when women don't know that, the marriage doesn't last.
