A good website to try is download.com. They offer freeware and shareware programs that will do just that for you, plus instructions and reviews. It's a very useful site.

Filters and Perental software is no where near 100% effective yet, the best thing to do is restrict stuff.... but without restricting sites, b/c what if you were writing a research paper DUH.
I find it fun to restrict viewable pictures (no pics on the browser show up at all on any site LOL), and restrict downloading from that user... so what's left is reading sex novels LOL, which makes them better readers. This only works if they have a restricted account such as a guest account or customized account (like USER).
Or just give them access to a Text Based Only Browser (that will be FUN)
Oh yeah and lets not forget, no multi-media useage, just in case they pop a DVD or CD in that they got from a friend or someone...

best tool i've found so far is from trend micro the copy i'm using is the beta for windows VISTA. but it is simple to use and it's a free trial. you can download a free 12 month trial of there internet security suite. which allows you to customize what sites to block or what sites to allow. you can even set up to block all internet sites except those that i select. a great feature if you have kids and want to restrict what they can access on the computer.
i've not set up my mail client yet so i've not tried the spam filter but if it's anything like the rest of the product then I can't rate this product any higher than 100% excelent.

there is stuff which will properly be put in on a laptop to capture the secret agent ware contained in the act of being put in, and block that from taking position. My associates swear through "No Script" which I easily have not yet put in on my laptop ... curiously that is one such product.
