Well, you should always save your work before ever shutting down, or you will lose it. If you are writing documents such in Microsoft word, you should save your information during the process because you could lose your information if the computer freezes or if something else like that happens. I save mine every few paragraphs or every page. It just depends on what I am writing about and working on--sometimes I forget. You do need to get into the habit of doing that. I have lost papers--my important ones for college--because I did not save my work as I typed it into the computer. You can also save pictures that you have scanned or received, in your picture file found on your "My documents" page.
You should save your important documents and pictures onto a CD or disc as well, in case something happens to your computer. This will be a backup for you. Plus you will be able to take the disc with you where ever you go.
I hope this has helped you.

Yes, if you shoot your computer, you will likely loose data. If shut down the computer you will not lose data stored/saved on the disk

Before shooting, take the hard disc out and then shoot, you will not loose any data.
Otherwise, don't shoot on the hard drive. You will not loose any data if you are not damaging the hard drive. For this, you must know the location of the hard drive in your system.
Come on, why do you want to shoot your computer ?. I want your reply for this question
