Marx described religion as the opium of the people. In so doing Marx sought to indicate that religion was an opiate that deadened the senses of the people to the crass exploitation to which they were subjected by the ruling classes of society.

I don't know about any Russian wirters but German Writer Karl Marx first said it in his book Das Kapital.

Karl Marx - referring to the fact that it made them 'high' almost, and forgot how bad their lives were. He said that people had to get rid of religion totally to be able to actually improve their lives.
