As a superpower the US is in trouble. They have economic, political and social problems that will in all likelihood spell the end of American dominance.
Economically, they have stripped their country of its industrial and manufacturing base thereby creating a trade imbalance. Also, they have artificially propped up their economy with low interest rates and irresponsible credit.
Politically, they are a nation in the throes of a Constitutional crises and the major political parties are either corrupt or indecisive. Internationally, they are losing respect because of their abrogation of international treaties.
Socially, they are being divided by the government into hostile groups. A major theme emerging from this is one of intolerance; which could result in the loss of its citizens constitutional rights.
China is the holder of most of the US debt, but I believe it will be moot because if they call it in then the world will face a catastrophic depression which will be triggered by the US defaulting. Who emerges from this tragedy will not in any way resemble a superpower.

I dont think things will change from the current conditions while the US is so technically advanced and now is still about 30 years ahead of China's military development. There will not be a balance like there was with Russia and the US for a long time again, rather a shift from military superiority to economic superiortiy. I foresee North America becoming weaker as Asians become more dominant if they are able to get along and end long standing trade issues....I am a Canadian, 53, and dont think the lifestyle we have now will be able to be sustained at the level we presently have.

I would have to say China would be the one to do it if anyone was. Which I say that like it could never happen; but inevitably like all empires we will someday fall from the top. China is a huge economic power and the population is just insane. Of course someday the European Union could technically be one nation, and the countries we know today would just be like states inside that country, that would also be a contender for number one superpower.

Great answers (except the usual wise cracks and point scoring answers).
Americans are generally ignorant and have an infalted opinion of their country. True US was the biggest power of 20th cent., but it will surely change. In the next two decades.
But the question is would the next power be a country?
I think gradually, in the interest of trade, political barriers would weaken and business and corporations would grow very powerful. The next suprepower could be a coroporation (if the are not already today).
Imagine, if Microsoft, GE, WalMart, Grazprom and Exxon Mobil and such companies were to merge in one giant conglomerate, they would wield more influence than the President of the US, or any other Head of state.
Then there is another treand, the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
If a person, or corporation were to control very advanced AI, it would dominate the world. But who is to say, that 'person' could be AI itself.

China. The 19th Century belonged to Britain. The 20th Century to the U.S. The 21st Century may go to China. Since Deng Xiao Ping launched his Four Modernizations in 1978, China has moved forward, if not fast forward, globally on all fronts. Its economy has throbbed with 10 pct annual growth rates the past 20 years. To support and sustain its new great leap, China is buying and securing future supplies of energy from around the world. It is also planning dozens of new nuclear power plants nationwide. In sports, it has thrived in world competition and hosts the 2008 Olympiad. In international relations, it is spreading its influence, particularly in Africa and the Middle East as well as East Asia and Europe. In defence, its military build-up has made Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld voice his concern in the Shangrila Dialog of Pacific-nation defence chiefs who met in Singapore June 5.
A competing second is India.

Will they become a superpower? definite, the subsequent century will see them upward thrust in standards of living, protection rigidity spending and purposes and strengthen their sphere of impression. although, their skill is constrained by potential of the reality that their financial equipment is built on an abundance of inexpensive exertions, and its inhabitants will shrink, become older and extra high priced with each decade as a effect of its one baby coverage (India is poised to become the subsequent considerable business strengthen center as they face none of those issues). It additionally lacks organic supplies and area to strengthen (the U. S. and Russia, meanwhile, have the two in abundance). part of the reason that China's strengthen has been so speedy is as a results of the fact it become outdoors of the international financial equipment for see you later, yet now that its caught up, its going to decelerate.
