Hard sciences use a lot of mathematics and formulae. Examples include Chemistry and Physics

Soft sciences use a lot of diagrams. Examples include Biology and Ecology

It is a question of attitude more than anything else. Chemists and Physicists don't regard Biology as a real science. Not enough maths, you see, not hard enough. (Snobbery, in my opinion)
