if you want to try linux, without touching the operating system (or even hard drive) you can use a live cd! It will boot from the cd, and it is linux, but it doesn't touch the hard drive. Have fun! Linux is also the best operating system! The best live cd (in my oppinion) is Slax http://www.slax.org/

Yes you can set up a dual boot, but most of the time Windows makes it unstable (depending on what version of Windows you're gonna put up there).

what the two dudes said above...

(If you do this back up important files regularly just to make sure, the last time I did this with Windows XP Pro it nearly crashed once per 3 times while I was in the Windows partition LOL, and be careful about centant programs that can't handle dual boot systems it's usually those utility programs like anti-viruses or registry programs like the cleaners depending on which softwear you choose some work some scr3w up in dual boot. GOOD Luck!)

Yes. First of all you need to install Windows XP and then you need to install Linux. Linux can identify that you have Windows in your machine and it loads what is known as a boot loader (either GRUB or LILO) and choosing GRUB or LILO is going to be in your hand. GRUB stands for Grand Unified Boot Loader and LILO stands for Linux Loader.

I suggest you to choose GRUB. If you have FAT32 file system in your XP, you will be able to read and write from Linux. If you are using NTFS, you will be able to read from Windows but writing on to that file system is slightly complicated even though not impossible.

Hope this will clear your doubt.

Yes
You can create a dual boot system. You can choose if you want to run linux or windows.
But you have to create a own partition for linux and one for windows.
Most linux installers will help you with this.
