The air still works, but on really hot days it doesn't cool as well. I was quoted 300 something by one shop sight unseen. Seemed high to me. I also saw that I can buy a kit to do it for around $39. Is it hard to recharge? I have never done that. Thanks.

A/C is not for DIY er's....ASK around for recommendations...BUT PAY to have the system serviced.... Cause going cheap ends up costing more......You must at least consider $200 and it may not come out to be that much.....Bsides ur ford 7-8 years old with alot of hours on her... so whats 200 usd...

Forget R-12, you don't have it. Your vehicle uses R-134A refrigerant. At present R-134A is around 7 bucks/12 oz can at Wal-Mart.

You need to have the pressures on your system checked. You may have problems other than low refrigerant, such as improper cooling flow, or possibly a plugged orifice, or a weak compressor. Just adding gas may overcharge and damge your system. I would charge around 40 bucks for a systrem check, and 30 bucks per pound for recharge.

no it is not hard to retro fit an r-12 a/c to a 134a a/c. you will have to purge the old system first. you should take it to a shop and have them drain the old refridgerant out. then just follow the directions in the kit.
