It is believed that all dolphins sleep with half a brain. No joke! When a dolphin such as a Pacific whitesided dolphin sleeps, half of its brain rests while the other half stays awake to allow the dolphin to function normally. Later, the two halves of the brain switch functions while the other side rests. This half-brained sleeping prevents dolphins from drowning while asleep.

a dolphin rests half of its brain at a time... im not sure how it helps though for when they need to breath...

maybe that half of their brain is aware enough to let them know when they need air... and they can either automatically breath or it could trigger them to wake up for that moment and breath... im not sure...

although i do know manatees automatically rise to the surface( kindof like sleep swimming)when they need air during rest... which is a major risk since theyre unaware of whats above... (boats).

perhaps dolphins are kindof the same way... but are more vigilant during sleep and can sense/ recognize danger subconsciously.

Just an FYI...dophins are mammals and sharks are fish. Sharks have to keep moving to help water flow through their gills for breathing whereas dolphins breathe air.

When it got too tired of swimming up to the surface to breathe, it will sleep peacefully on the seabed ....... FOREVER!

They only sleep with half of their brain at a time, and they don't seem to dream.
