Actually, it is just another way of excusing yourself to go do something else. Not necessarily to go to the bathroom. If you have to excuse yourself to go to the bathroom, you'd say something like, "I'm going to the head","I have to go to the john", "I'm going to go drop the kids off at the pool", etc.
You could also say "I gotta go see a horse about a man!"
