A dell is a small wooded valley. Wasn't the rhyme, "the farmer IN the dell?"

It's like a valley but it's more round. Almost like a bowl with hills around it.
When I was a kid "Farmer in the Dell" was my nickname because I had pet chickens and goats and my house was in a dell.
